About the Performance Driving School

The TWS Motorsports Performance Driving School is a fun and exciting way for licensed drivers to experience the thrill of driving at high speeds, legally, in a controlled environment. Education, courtesy for others, and safety are stressed from the beginning of the day, starting with drivers’ meetings and classroom instruction for those attending for the first time.

After classroom curricula, participants can ride in and drive their car with a personal instructor. Each student receives four (4) 24-minute driving sessions each day. Your instructor will gradually guide you to a higher level of driving skill at a pace that is appropriate and comfortable to you. There is no pressure or competition involved. This is a performance driving school focused on improving your driving skills. Your comfort and experience level dictates how fast you go and what run group you are in.

All new drivers start in the Green Group. As skill, speed, and confidence increase, instructors will recommend students for a ‘check ride’ by an evaluator to move to a more advanced group.

There are five run groups based on driver skill, speed, and experience.

Green Group is for new drivers to Texas World Speedway and those still building speed, experience, skill, awareness, courtesy, and confidence. Green students will demonstrate flag awareness, traffic awareness, traffic courtesy, and the ‘driving line’ prior to advancing to the Blue Group. All Green Group drivers have a personal instructor assigned to them.

Blue Group is for those drivers who have successfully participated in the Green Group and want to increase their experience, skill, smoothness, awareness, and confidence. Blue Group drivers will be introduced to advanced driving skills, such as trail braking, heel-toe shifting, and threshold braking. Blue students will master flag response, traffic management, control input smoothness, and the ‘driving line’ prior to advancing to the Yellow Group. Blue Group drivers will have an instructor assigned to them.

Yellow Group is for drivers that have successfully participated in the Blue Group and have sufficient performance driving experience to drive ‘solo’ (without a dedicated instructor). They're building confidence, gaining more experience, increasing speed, and fine tuning their advanced skills while driving solo. Yellow students will master threshold braking, trail braking, and throttle steering prior to advancing to the White group. Yellow group drivers will receive at least one instruction session per day.

White Group is for advanced drivers working on advanced techniques such as driving off-line, passing in turns, and trailing throttle oversteer. White students will master these skills prior to advancing to the Time Trial program. White group drivers will receive at least one instruction session per weekend. Advanced Instructors will recommend highly experienced White group drivers for an instructor ‘check ride’ by the Chief Driving Instructor, to select drivers for entry into the Instructor Training Program.

Red Group is for PDS instructors only.

The designation of a participant's run group is subject to the approval of, and reviewed by, the Chief Driving Instructor and Chief Steward.

TWS Driving Requirements

Drivers must have a valid driver's license. If a driver is under 18, a parent must sign a minor’s waiver and be present at the event.

Vehicles must be inspected by a qualified mechanic's shop prior to the event and be appropriate for high speed road course driving.  Most modern automobiles (1984+) qualify.  Some high-performance SUVs and Crossovers also qualify, but light trucks and vans do not.  If in doubt, you may request clarification by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

All convertibles must have a roll bar, or integrated Roll-Over Protection System (ROPS).  Any make of car delivered with factory installed roll over protection meets the minimum standards for TWS PDS and OTD events, but not T&T events.  The windshield alone is not considered to be factory roll over protection.  TWS recommends that the roll bar or ROPS extend above the driver's and passenger's heads when properly seated, belted, and wearing helmets.  TWS recommends that convertibles have the soft top up or a hard top in place while on track.  This includes sunroofs, T-Tops, and Targa tops.  Convertibles without a top in place are considered 'open cars' and will comply with open car safety requirements.

Convertibles driving with the top down, or top removed, are considered 'open cars'.  This includes cars with T-Tops removed, Targa tops removed, and sunroofs open.  TWS recommends all drivers and passengers in open cars have window and roof nets, or wear arm restraints, such that the persons' arms cannot extend outside of the vehicle in the event of a roll over.

Drivers must have a completed and signed Technical Inspection Form before driving on the track.  Drivers must present the
Technical Inspection Form when checking in at Event Registration.

What To Bring to TWS

Vehicle – Technical inspection form completed and signed, and emptied of all loose objects.

Any tools, fluids, or tires that may be needed.

Helmet – Must have Snell Memorial Foundation SA 2000 rating or better (until Dec 31, 2014). Rental helmets are available for $5.00, but are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis.

Closed toe shoes for driving.

It is highly suggested that you also bring the following for your comfort: a chair, a cooler with water for drinking, and snacks. Our concession stand is open for breakfast and lunch, and the Paddock PX can also supply water and snacks.

Spectators are welcome at all TWS Motorsports sponsored events. Spectators must sign a waiver at the front gate. Spectators are limited to the paddock, concession stand, infield, and the VIP stands. Specifically, no spectators are allowed in the grandstands or beyond the safety fences.

During lunch, at 12:15 – 12:45, we offer parade laps for any who are interested. Parade laps allow everyone the opportunity to drive the road course configuration being used that weekend. They are driven at normal street speeds with seat belts on, but no helmets are required. An advanced driver or instructor leads the group around the course for five laps and then leads them into the paddock. No passing or racing is allowed during parade laps and doing so will result in ejection from the premises.

We understand that situations may occur that prevent participants from coming to an event. Notification of personal cancellation should be given as soon as possible (via e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) TWS may also cancel events (with at least 24 hours notice to registrants) for reasons such as weather (including unsafe local travel conditions), unsafe track conditions, or insufficient participation/registration for an event.  Cancellations will be issued credit in the following manner:

Full credit toward another event when event is cancelled for any reason by TWS.

Full credit toward another event with written notice given 72 hours prior to the event start date/time.

Credit toward another event, minus a $25 administration fee, will be given within when written notice is received before the day of the event but not more than 72 hours prior to the event.

Credit will not be issued on or after an event start date.

Refunds will not be given for reasons including, but not limited to: weather, track condition, mechanical failure of registrant's vehicle, damage to registrant's vehicle, ineligibility of registrant’s vehicle, ineligibility of driver for a particular event, and cancellation/delay of an event.

Refunds will not be given for multiple event packages once the first event has been attended.

TWS and PDS reserve the right to change any element of an event format at any time, before or during an event, for any reason.  Event format includes, but is not limited to: run group assignments, session lengths, event schedule, track configuration, academics & curricula, instructor assignments, garage assignments, and course marshaling.
